North Carolina Broker Continuing Education Courses
Active Versus Inactive Status
Your NC real estate license must be on active status in order to receive
compensation for brokerage services (this includes referrals for which
you receive payment). You must complete all annual Continuing Education
(CE) courses to remain on active status.
If you do not plan to use your license in the near future, you may renew
your license annually on inactive status by paying your annual
licensing fee. You may continue to renew on inactive status indefinitely
without completing CE courses. However, you will need to attend some CE
courses in order to reactivate your license. If you renew your license
without satisfying the CE requirement, your license will automatically
be placed on inactive status.
NC broker licenses expire each June 30 unless properly renewed. After a license has been expired for 6 months or more, the North Carolina Real Estate Commission
may require you to retake the state exam.
The Outer Banks School of Real Estate is an official sponsor of Continuing Education (CE) courses for Brokers in North Caroilna. The North Carolina Real Estate Commission requires all brokers to complete CE in order to maintain their licenses. North Carolina broker's licenses expire each June 30 unless properly renewed. After a license has been expired for 6 months or more, the North Carolina Real Estate Commission may require you to retake the state exam.
Continuing Education Overview
North Carolina Real Estate Brokers are required to take 8 hours of Continuing Education classes by June 10 of each year to remain on active status.
These 8 hours include 4 hours of NCREC's prescribed Mandatory Update4 hours of an Elective of your choice.
NCREC changes the Mandatory Update course annually.
Licensees must attend 90% of a CE course and comply with student
participating standards in order to receive credit for the course.
A person who is issued a broker license (either by examination,
reciprocity or reinstatement) does NOT have to take CE
courses during the period in which the license is issued.
However, they must satisfy the CE requirement prior to the second
renewal of the license.
Realtor Ethics,
You Be The Judge, and the NCREEA award-winning Resort Property
Management course are Electives taught at the Outer Banks School of Real
Estate.
Up to 4 hours of Elective credits for a course may be
carried over to the next license period if no portion of the credit
hours for the course were applied toward the CE requirement for the
current license period. Thus, carry-over credit may be granted for extra
elective courses taken, but not for extra hours in one course.
Cost of CE Courses
$55 for one course or $100 for two courses
BICAR Eligibility
The Outer Banks School of Real Estate also offers a Broker-in-Charge Annual Review course
(BICAR). This course is designed for and restricted to currently
designated Brokers-in-Charge or for those who wish to remain BIC
Eligible.
A broker is BIC eligible when he or she has been designated
as a BIC and completed the NCREC’s 12-hour BIC course.
A broker may
maintain that eligibility indefinitely, even when not serving as a BIC,
by taking the Broker-in-Charge Annual Review (BICAR) course each license
period.
The BICAR satisfies 4 hours of the annual Continuing Education Elective
requirement. A broker who is not a BIC or who is
not BIC eligible will not receive credit for the BICAR course.
The broker must also take the Mandatory Annual Update
course and renew his or her license.
Cost of BICAR Courses
$55 for BICAR or $100 with Mandatory Update
